Store conversion rate formula

Retail conversion rate: how many visitors actually buy?

Conversion rate is the single number that tells you how good your store is at turning people who walk in into people who pay. It is also the number most shop owners have never seen, because their POS only counts the buyers.

What store conversion rate means

Store conversion rate is the share of visitors who made a purchase. If people come in, look around and leave, your traffic is fine but something inside the store is losing them: price, stock, layout, queue time or service.

Online shops have tracked this for years. Physical shops can do the same once they count visitors at the door with a footfall counter.

The conversion rate formula

  • Conversion rate = number of transactions ÷ number of visitors × 100
  • Use transactions from your POS, not items sold.
  • Use visitors entering, from a door counter, for the same period.
  • Calculate it by hour and by day, not only per month.

ExampleOn Saturday your door counter shows 640 visitors and your POS shows 192 transactions. 192 ÷ 640 × 100 = a conversion rate of 30. On Sunday you have 480 visitors and 168 transactions, a rate of 35, so the quieter day actually converted better.

What is a good conversion rate?

There is no single good number. It varies widely by type of business: a takeaway coffee counter, a fashion shop and a furniture showroom will look completely different, and so will a mall unit compared with a street shop. Industry figures you see online are indicative only.

The most useful benchmark is your own store over time, and your branches compared with each other. A drop against your own normal is a signal worth acting on the same week.

Also look at conversion by hour. Many shops convert well in quiet hours and badly at peak times, which usually points to staffing or queues rather than to price or product.

What pushes conversion down

  • Too few staff at busy hours, so customers leave instead of waiting. See staff scheduling.
  • Out-of-stock bestsellers, or the item is there but hard to find.
  • Long queues at the till during peak hours.
  • A campaign that brings browsers rather than buyers.
  • Prices or offers that do not match what the window or the ad promised.

Common mistakes when measuring conversion

  • Counting staff and delivery drivers as visitors, which pushes the rate down.
  • Counting groups as several visitors when only one person pays. Watch the trend rather than the absolute number.
  • Comparing a Friday evening with a Tuesday morning.
  • Celebrating more revenue while conversion quietly falls, hidden by higher traffic.

How Tapsiera tracks conversion for you

Tapsiera puts door visitors and POS transactions side by side, hour by hour, so conversion is calculated for you, for each branch. When it drops, you get an alert and a likely reason based on your staffing and traffic at that hour, plus what fixing it could be worth in riyals.

No POS? Tapsiera texts you on WhatsApp each night for the day's sales, and you reply with the number or a photo of the closing report. You can try the demo with sample café and mall data at app.tapsiera.com.

ExampleTapsiera shows conversion at your second branch dropped from 32 to 24 on weekend evenings while traffic stayed the same. Adding one staff member for those hours could bring back around 900 SAR a week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate conversion rate without a door counter?

Not reliably. Your POS counts buyers only, so you need a visitor count from the door to know how many people did not buy.

How often should I check conversion?

Weekly at least, and hourly for busy days. Problems usually show up at specific hours, not across the whole day.

Does a higher conversion rate always mean more sales?

Not on its own. Revenue also depends on visitors and average ticket, so watch all three together.

How much does Tapsiera cost?

199 SAR per branch per month, VAT included. The door sensor is 1,599 SAR one time per sensor with installation included, and you can reserve now for 99 SAR, which is deducted from your first payment.
